Marc Chagall

Marc Chagall was born in Russia in 1887.In 1907 he began studying art with Leon Bakst in St Petersberg. It was at this time that his distinct style began to emerge. In 1910 he moved to Paris for four years and during this time he painted some of his most famous paintings of the Jewish village.

During World War I he lived in Russia, and in 1917, endorsing the revolution, he was appointed Commisar of Fine Arts in Vitebsk and then director of the newly established Free Academy of Art.

In 1922 he moved to France and lived there permanently except for 1941 to 1948 when he fled France and lived in the USA.

In addition to images of the Jewish world, Chagall's paintings are often inspired by themes from the Bible. He visited Israel many times and his work can be found on wall decorations at the Knesset and the twelve famous stained glass windows at the Hadassah Hospital .

In 1963 Chagall learned the art of making lithographs under the gifted apprenticeship of Charles Sorlier. a professional and highly talented printer in the printing studio of Mourlet. In this period he created his graphic masterpieces like Daphnis and Chloe.

Chagall received many prizes and much recognition for his work. He was also one of very few artists to exhbit work at the Louvre, Paris in his lifetime.
